The single most-used trig identity:

It comes straight from the unit circle: a point at angle $\theta$ has coordinates $(\cos \theta ,\sin \theta )$ on a circle of radius 1, so by Pythagorean, ${\cos }^2\theta +{\sin }^2\theta =1^2$.
