6.A.1 — Write and interpret ratios.
Step 01 of 04
A ratio compares two quantities. It can be written THREE ways.
| Word form | →3 to 5 |
| Colon | →3 : 5 |
| Fraction | →3/5 |
Step 02 of 04
Worked example. A bag has 12 red marbles and 8 blue marbles. Ratio of red to blue?
Simplify like a fraction: .
Step 03 of 04
Order matters. "Red to blue" is 12:8 = 3:2; "blue to red" is 8:12 = 2:3. Different ratios for the same situation.
Step 04 of 04
Part-to-part vs. part-to-whole.
| Part to part | →12 red : 8 blue = 3 : 2 |
| Part to whole | →12 red : 20 total = 3 : 5 |
| Other part to whole | →8 blue : 20 total = 2 : 5 |
