AI grading for teachers
What these tools genuinely do well, where they still fall over, and how to test one on your own class before you trust it with a stack of papers. We make one of them, and this page says plainly where ours is the wrong choice.
What AI grading actually does
A grader reads finished student work, decides whether each answer is right, and writes back a score with feedback. The useful ones do not compare against an answer key. They work the problem out themselves, which is what lets them accept ½, 0.5, and 50% as the same answer, with or without units, and handle a student who got there by an unexpected route.
The time saved is not really in the marking. It is in the feedback. Writing out why an answer is wrong, 150 times, is the part that eats a weekend, and it is the part most teachers quietly drop when the pile gets high.
Where it still falls over
Reading the page, not doing the maths. Faint pencil, cramped working, an answer circled in the margin, a diagram drawn freehand. This is where nearly all real-world errors come from, and it is why a grader should flag what it cannot read rather than guess at it.
Multi-step work. Most tools were built for typed essays. Grading a page of algebra worked out by hand, where the answer is right but line three is wrong, is a different problem, and a lot of products claim it without doing it.
Anything genuinely open. A creative response, an argument that is unconventional but correct, a student who misread the question but reasoned well from there. A rubric score here is a starting point for your judgement, not a substitute.
How to test one properly
Take five papers you have already graded yourself, including your two hardest, and run them through. You are not checking whether the total matches. You are checking three things: did it read the handwriting, did it catch the mistakes you caught, and when it was unsure did it say so or did it bluff.
A tool that quietly marks an unreadable answer wrong is worse than no tool, because you will not know to look. Do this before a class set, not after.
Keeping yourself in control
The grade should stay yours. Practically that means you can override any result, you can see why the tool decided what it decided, and nothing goes back to a student until you release it. Treat any product that makes overriding awkward as a red flag.
On student data, ask directly: is the work used to train models, how long is it kept, and is there a data-processing agreement. Get it in writing.
Choosing between the tools
The category is more crowded than it looks, and the tools are less interchangeable than they look. The decision usually comes down to one question: what do your students actually hand in? Typed essays and paper worksheets are close to different products.

Common questions
Is AI grading accurate enough to use on real student work?
On work with a clear right answer, a good grader is reliable enough to trust once you have checked it on your own material. The failure mode that matters is not arithmetic, it is reading: faint pencil, cramped working, an answer written in the margin. That is why anything unreadable should be flagged for you rather than guessed, and why you should always be able to override a result.
Can AI grade handwritten work?
Some tools can, and many cannot. Most AI graders were built for typed essays pasted into a box. Grading a photograph of handwritten, multi-step work is a materially harder problem, so test this specifically before committing rather than taking a feature list at its word.
Will students know their work was graded by AI?
That is your call, and it should be. Most teachers tell their class plainly. The grade is still yours: the tool proposes, you confirm, and you can change anything before it goes back.
Is it allowed under FERPA?
Student work is an education record, so the question is what the vendor does with it. Ask whether the work is used to train models, who can see it, whether there is a data-processing agreement, and how long it is kept. Get the answers in writing before you upload a class set.
How much does AI grading cost?
Most tools have a free tier in the 30 to 100 submissions per month range and paid tiers roughly between $7 and $20 per teacher per month. At that price the real question is not cost, it is whether the tool handles the specific kind of work your students hand in.
